"Motor Control and Learning, Fifth Edition, begins with an introduction to research and fundamental concepts important to understanding motor behavior. In the second part of the text, readers will learn about motor control, including contributions from the sensory and central nervous systems; principles related to speed and accuracy; factors involved in movement control and coordination; and factors that determine skill differences between people and among groups of people. The final portion of the text covers skill acquisition, examining special methodological problems for studying motor learning, various theoretical treatments of motor learning, and factors associated with the retention and transfer of skills."--pub. desc.

Over the last two decades, Eastern psychology has provided fertile ground for therapists, as a cornerstone, a component, or an adjunct of their work. In particular, research studies are identifying the Buddhist practice of mindfulness a non-judgmental self-observation that promotes personal awareness as a basis for effective interventions for a variety of disorders. The Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness is a clearly written, theory-to-practice guide to this powerful therapeutic approach (and related concepts in meditation, acceptance, and compassion) and its potential for treating a range of frequently encountered psychological problems. Key features of the Handbook: A neurobiological review of how mindfulness works. Strategies for engaging patients in practicing mindfulness. Tools and techniques for assessing mindfulness. Interventions for high-profile conditions, including depression, anxiety, trauma Special chapters on using mindfulness in oncology and chronic pain. Interventions specific to children and elders, Unique applications to inpatient settings. Issues in professional training. Appendix of exercises. The Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness includes the contributions of some of the most important authors and researchers in the field of mindfulness-based interventions. It will have wide appeal among clinicians, researchers, and scholars in mental health, and its potential for application makes it an excellent reference for students and trainees.

Expanding on the critical contributions of previous editions, this updated and comprehensive resource covers the latest diagnostic criteria of insomnia. The book is thematically divided into two parts. The first section consists of chapters on nomenclature, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, complications and prognosis and treatment both pharmacological and behavioral. The second features chapters on insomnia in special populations, including ones on children and adolescents, cancer sufferers and survivors, in pregnancy, in menopausal women and in patients with neurological disorders and those with psychiatric illnesses. This third edition fills an important niche in the medical literature by addressing insomnia in its multiple forms, summarizes the findings published in different medical journals, and presents these to the practicing health care provider in an easily accessible format.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) has been identified as an important clinical transition between normal aging and the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since treatments for AD are most likely to be most effective early in the course of the disease, MCI has become a topic of great importance and has been investigated in different populations of interest in many countries. This book brings together these differing perspectives on MCI for the first time. The introductory chapter is an overview of the evolving conceptions of cognitive change in later life and identifies the implicit and explicit assumptions underlying MCI research. The next two sections describe the findings emerging from studies conducted with different populations of interest (i.e., general population samples and specific samples) from different countries. Each chapter describes the types of information collected in the study, how MCI was defined, information pertaining to prevalence and incidence of MCI and important findings emerging from that study (e.g., Mayo Clinic, Kungsholmen Project, Melbourne Aging Study). The next section of the book describes the current status of intervention research for persons with MCI (e.g., pharmacologic, behavioral). A final chapter summarizes emerging trends in research on MCI and identifies promising areas for future research. This volume provides a comprehensive resource for clinicians, researchers, and students involved in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with MCI

This book is taking a broad health focused approach towards Domestic Violence and Abuse (DVA). It is now well established that DVA exerts a significant and detrimental impact on the health and wellbeing of those who experience abuse. Universally healthcare professionals encounter individuals and families where DVA is or has taken place. This book is beneficial to a range of health care professionals through an exploration of theories and classifications of DVA, consideration of DVA in different contexts and consideration of the core issues surrounding working with individuals and families where DVAhas been identified. It provides a much needed evidence based addition to the existing texts in this field in terms of the inclusion of real life scenarios, reflective exercises and pointers for further practice development. This book is a key point of reference for professionals working within a broad range of health care environments.
